CHAPTER 15

I brushed off the feeling of not really knowing what I was feeling. It wasn’t anger. Not toward Grayson, anyway. Or maybe it was. We worked well together and I’d never questioned the guarded aspects of an investigation. Nor had he ever had to remind me what was off the record. But with this one, there was a tiny sprout of discontent edging its way between us. And maybe that tiny sprout spreading the discontent was a spunky redhead?

“Stop it,” I said out loud. We’d worked through a tough investigation before. We’d do it again.

My bigger concern was how was I going to broach the subject of Keeper’s parentage with Mary. Truthfully, it was no one’s business. Unless the remains were Kenneth Dupree’s. That was a whole different ballgame. I’d cross that bridge if and when we got to it.

I pushed the thoughts to the far corners of my brain and concentrated on the twists and turns of the road. The switchbacks in this part were awful with dented guardrails as evidence. When I got to Mary’s, I sat in the driveway and collected my thoughts. My mind kept flashing back to Mary nearly collapsing in my arms when she experienced the vision. What in God’s name would this do to her?

The curtain in the living room pulled back a tad, just enough for someone to see who was in the driveway. I took another look at the picture, then at Keeper as he stepped out onto the porch. He waved excitedly and warmth spread through my soul like water trickling through a stream, slow and easy. I loved these people so much. Knowing I had information that may hurt them weighed heavy on my chest. I dropped the picture in my bag then walked up the drive to greet him.

He wrapped his arms around me and squeezed out a hug like he hadn’t seen me in years. “Hey Ava! Momma, Ava’s here. Where’s your friend?”

“Aaron? I’m not sure where he is today.” I knew where he best not be and that was my driveway.

Keeper shuffled me inside then closed the door behind us. Mary sat on the sofa with stacks of clean laundry on the cushion beside her. She pulled fresh-smelling garments from a plastic basket, carefully folding each one.

“Look, Momma. Ava’s here.”

Mary smiled that tiny smile of hers then moved a stack of clothes from the sofa. She patted the empty cushion. “I can see that, Son. Here, Ava, have a seat.”

I sat beside Mary while Keeper curled into an old recliner in front of a modest television, entranced by an afternoon game show.

I’d never given much thought to their living room as most of the time, Mary was in the kitchen brewing up some new tonic when I visited. The room was dated with green and brown plaid furniture older than me. A large dreamcatcher hung in a corner like a mobile over a baby’s crib. Gold-plated picture frames, some showing signs of tarnish, hung in no specific pattern over the sofa.
